Youth Referees

Interested in becoming a Youth Referee? Please read through these FAQs and direct any additional questions to the Referee Coordinator at [email protected]

How do I become qualified?

In order to referee in the Dynamo Recreation games, you need to attend a Youth Referee training and pass a test at the end. The general information presented is shown in the Referee Training handout, but the training is also a time for the Referees to ask more nuanced questions as well as the Trainer to gauge their understanding of the material.

Youth Referee training sessions are held as often as necessary to replenish the pool of available Youth Referees. We anticipate the next training to occur in Spring 2024.  In order to get on the list to be notified about the training, please fill out the Spring 2024 Referee Interest Form.

If you have been qualified, you do not need attend any additional training, but you are welcome to come to any training as a refresher. If you need to update your email, phone number, or parent's information, please fill out this form <stay tuned for new link>.

Do I need anything else to referee?

Yes. You will need:

  • Yellow referee shirt, with your badge attached (like this one from Amazon)
  • Black shorts (may be covered with long pants in cold weather)
  • Watch for keeping time (NOT your phone)
  • Suitable shoes
  • A whistle (we'll give you one)

How old do I have to be?

You can referee in Dynamo Recreation if you are 12 years of age or older.

How many weeks do I have to work?

It's up to you. All games are played on Saturday and Sunday.

Each week, the Referee Coordinator will send an email with slots available for the upcoming weekend's games. You can sign up for all times that you can be available to referee. Typically you won't be expected to referee more than 2 consecutive games, but the more time slots you sign up for, the more likely you are to get a game assignment.

How do I sign up to work?

The Referee Coordinator will make the game assignments based on everyone's availability and send them out near the end of the week. If you are assigned, you are expected to confirm that you will referee your assigned games. If you cannot ref your assigned game, you must email AND text immediately so a substitute can be arranged. The contact email and cell phone number are on every referee sign-up email sent out.

What type of games will I be refereeing?

Our league spans age groups from U5 up through and including U18.

The younger kids (U6 and U8) play microsoccer games -- two small field, side-by-side games with pop-up goals. Newer referees will be assigned this type of game, which is typically 3v3 or 4v4.

The older kids (U10 and U13) play full-sided games -- one larger field with standard nets and goalies. Two more experienced referees will be assigned for each of these games, which are typically 7v7.

Rules specific to this each type of game will be covered in training.

How much money do I make?

You will make a minimum of $12 per hour. If you consistently earn good reviews, you'll get a bonus of $1-$3 per hour. Experienced referees are invited to referee full-sized games, which may also earn you a bonus.

Does my qualification transfer to refereeing Travel games?

No. For more information on refereeing Travel games, contact [email protected]. You will need to be certified by PA West, read up on the certification process here: Become a Referee | Pennsylvania - West (pawest-soccer.org).
